Automania! Science! And… A Car That Could Reproduce Itself?
Or, an unusual way of preventing war
“With universal immobility war is now unthinkable.” – Automania 2000
I’m away from my desk this week, so here’s a treat for you, courtesy of Jonn Elledge who shared this in a recent newsletter.
“Automania 2000” was nominated for the “best animated short film” Oscar in 1964.
In a world of affluence, all people really wanted was bigger and bigger cars. Does this sound familiar?
And it ultimately led to cars literally piled on top of each other with those living in the lower layers wanting to get higher up.
Some things never change.
Even the scientist overseeing it all, a man who helped develop new standards of living in every aspect of life, eventually comes to regret his part in it.
If you’ve got a quick nine minutes, grab your coffee and take a look. This, folks, is motornormativity and carspreading to the max, a vision of the future in which, thanks to an obsession with cars, war has become impossible… so maybe not all bad?
Enjoy!
